Decoding workations, the latest remote work trend

With more and more organisations embracing remote work, ‘workation’ has become the latest buzzword. Simply put, a workation is work + vacation. It may seem like an oxymoron at first, but the ability to work from anywhere has enabled professionals to combine work with leisure travel. The idea is to take a vacation while being logged into work, made easier with our smart devices, cloud  collaboration and Wi-Fi access.

Why take a workation?

The global Covid-19 pandemic has taken away much of our freedom of movement. Amidst the restrictions, workations are truly a break in the clouds. With technology keeping us connected, we no longer need to be tied down to desks and offices in ways that we were earlier. 

The blurring boundaries between professional and personal lives may work for some and not for others. Still, it does allow us the liberty to design our own lives - a privilege only a few enjoyed before the Covid-19 pandemic. Many have moved to remote areas on workations to be away from crowded cities and stayed for months together. In other words, there is no better time for a workation than now!

Here’s why a workation is a must-do:

Regain focus

No home commitments, and fewer chores, help declutter one’s mind and improve focus. With minimal distractions and a new setting, it is not a surprise that most workations prove to be more productive than one would expect. 

Work better

Carrying your office in your backpack brings an added sense of self-discipline and ownership, which improves work quality. As the designer of your own life and time, quality against quantity becomes a priority almost naturally in a place you choose.

Imagine and Innovate

One cannot underestimate the restorative and inspiring powers of a change in scenery, and a workation provides that change. It may just turn out to be what you needed to get out of that slump or block. Before you know it, you’ll be innovating and maybe even come up with your next big idea! After all, you have to get out of the box to think out of the box. 

Fuel your wanderlust

It is the perfect way to rekindle your wanderlust. It is a vacation, after all, albeit with your office in your backpack. Typically, you’ll explore the destination early morning and evening and be at work during the day. Weekends can be for discovering the forest trails, exploring lesser-travelled roads, and experiencing the local culture.
