4 Tips to keep your child safe online

Children are online more than ever before. With learning and a variety of activities being shifted online, their exposure to the Internet has grown even more. In 2019 itself, 66 million Internet users in India were between the age group of 5 to 11 years, according to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI)1.

The Internet is exciting. It allows us to work, play, learn and connect. But, like in the physical world, there are many known and unknown risks that lurk in the virtual world too. Children, though tech-savvy, are particularly vulnerable to these risks. Identity theft, cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content and online scams are some of the risks threatening young Internet users.

4 tips to save children only

As a parent, you can follow these practices to try to keep your children safe in cyberspace.

Make children aware of the dangers

You can reduce their vulnerability to cyberattacks by making them aware of the various threats. Teach them about the importance of following safe Internet practices. Some of these are setting up strong passwords, not sharing personal information online and not clicking on unknown links. Tell them that the rule about avoiding strangers applies to the Internet too. Explain why they must be cautious about befriending someone online.

Set clear rules and boundaries

Depending on their age, school work and maturity level, set clear rules and boundaries on the usage of devices, websites to visit and time spent online. Based on their age and extent of privacy rights, you could keep tabs on the sites they visit and whom they communicate with online. Involve them in real-life activities to reduce their time online. This will also enhance their physical and mental well-being.

Use technology to be cyber safe

Use technology to keep your children cyber secure. Install parental security software on their systems. Set up firewalls for websites that are off limits to children. Many devices are equipped with child safety features as well. Ensure that your children have the latest security software on their devices. Teach them to use only password-protected and known WiFi networks. Set up multi-factor authentication for them wherever possible.

Encourage open communication

Converse early and regularly with your children about the pros and cons of the Internet. Open and honest communication will help them develop a solid foundation to use the Internet safely and responsibly. Kids may hide threats and uncomfortable incidents out of the fear of shame, judgement or losing their device privileges. Have frequent, non-judgmental and age-appropriate conversations related to responsible online use. This will make them comfortable to talk about their online activities and any unsavoury incidents.

Children are more trusting than adults. They are also less likely to have their eye out for threats. They look at the fun element more than the dangers involved. Therefore, it is the responsibility of parents to protect their child’s online activity. You can take proactive steps to equip your children against cyber threats and ensure safe Internet use.
