Three reasons to plan a digital detox weekend
A digital detox is taking a break from screens and devices for a brief period. That includes mobile, computers, television and tablets. Almost everything we do is now digital. In addition to work, entertainment and communication, we depend on these technologies for everyday activities like grocery shopping and banking too. So, it's fair to think that a digital detox is next to impossible. But there was a time before technology. Most people have fewer professional obligations over the weekend making it the ideal time for a digital detox.
If you have been toying with the idea, here are three reasons that will convince you to take the plunge.
A break for your mind
With nonstop notifications and switching from one screen to another, you're putting yourself through a sensory overload. Your brain is processing too much information and not all of it is essential. Like a detox diet gives the digestive system a break and cleanses the body, a digital detox is a break for your mind that restores mental well-being. Disconnect from the virtual world to enjoy the present moments of your ‘real environment’.
Time with your loved ones
It happens so often that when a loved one is talking to you, you are distracted by a work-related e-mail, checking the news or comparing your life to another's curated moments on social media. Unplug from the digital world to increase quality time spent with family. When the entire family goes on a digital detox together, they can bond over tech-free activities and communicate better. Going on a digital detox regularly will help you be a role model to other family members. You can teach them that gadgets are just tools and encourage them to use devices responsibly and not depend on them.
Rediscover the joy of hobbies
Our devices make it easy to alleviate boredom. Whether it's endlessly scrolling a social media feed or binge-watching a series. It may be a convenient way to pass time but it's at the cost of our mental health. Before technology, hobbies were the antidote to boredom. Utilise the free time earned from a digital detox to discover an offline activity you enjoy. For some, it may be tougher to give up the mobile while for others it may be the television. You can start by giving up one device at a time, for a day and then the weekend. Once you experience the benefits of a digital detox, it'll be easier to make it a regular habit.
