HDFC Ltd. was incorporated in 1977 as the first specialised mortgage company in India. HDFC Ltd. provides financial assistance to individuals, corporates and developers for the purchase or construction of residential housing. It also provides property related services (e.g. property identification, sales services and valuation), training and consultancy. Of these activities, housing finance remains the dominant activity. HDFC Ltd. has a client base of over 13.45 lac borrowers, over 18 lac depositors, over 1.94 lac shareholders and over 30,000 deposit agents, as at March 31,2015.

As at March 31,2015, HDFC Ltd. had mortgage loan assets of Rs.2281.81 billion. Since inception, HDFC Ltd. has financed over 4.9 million housing units. 79.65% of shareholders in HDFC Ltd. are foreign investors. HDFC Ltd’s market capitalisation as at March 31,2015 stood at around Rs 1890.82 billion.

HDFC Ltd's borrowings consist of domestic term loans from banks and insurance companies, bonds and retail deposits. HDFC Ltd. has received the highest rating for its bonds and deposits program for the Twentieth year in succession.

The Court of Session in Scotland approved this in June 2006 and Standard Life plc floated on the London Stock Exchange on 10 July 2006.
